American Funk rock musician (bassist, singer-songwriter) from Cincinnati, Ohio.
Chris Sherman aka Freekbass grew up listening to Bootsy Collins, Zapp, Midnight Star & the Ohio Players. As a teenager, he used to frequent the neighborhoods cities of Clifton and Corryville to soak up the local music scene. While still in high school, he formed a alternative rock/New wave band called Sleep Theatre who got signed and released two albums (1988 "Escape Is Calling" & 1993 "The Cure Of Folly"). After graduating from the School for Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA), he then formed in 1993 the eight-piece funk band Shag with guitarist Chris Donnelly. After Shag's split in 1998, he released a solo album called "Ultra-Violet Impact" under the moniker FreeBass. Bootsy Collins, who had produced two Shag records & had them signed on his Solid sub-label, renamed him "Freekbass" (to avoid confusion with "Chris" Donnelly while they were in studio & after hearing "Chris" Sherman having fun playing and making "freaky sounds" on a variety of bass pedals during a full day recording session) and subsequently produced for him two albums in 1999 and 2001 ("Body Over Mind" and "The Air is Fresher Underground").
